Grant Projects on drinking water and sanitation in the South 

Through the Flemish Partnership Water for Development, Flanders wants to use its knowledge and expertise to contribute to the realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals around safe drinking water and sanitation.   

What is the purpose of the grant? 

The purpose of this subsidy is to support projects that focus on drinking water and sanitation, and also have a positive influence on the climate, sustainable energy, life on the land, health and gender, among other things.   

This call focuses on drinking water and sanitation projects in the South that are carried out with the involvement of several Flemish and local actors.    

Who can submit an application? 

The application is intended for projects born out of cooperation between at least 3 Flemish actors (1 Flemish proposer and 2 Flemish partners) and at least 1 local South actor.  

The application can be submitted by local authorities, companies, associations and organizations. 

How much funding is there? 

A maximum of 569,000 euro is set aside for cofinancing of profitable projects. 

Which projects are eligible?    

A project can be eligible if it is at least committed to  

• Contributing to universal and equal access to safe and affordable drinking water (SDG 6.1.).  
• A capacity building component in the South, linked to water and sanitation (SDG 6.a.) and   
• On at least 3 elements from the list below:
  • Commitment to water retention (SDG 6.1).   
  • Contribute to improved hygiene at the household level (SDG 6.2).   
  • Commit to adequate and appropriate sanitation (SDG 6.2).  
  • Contribute to improved water quality, for example by reducing pollution and increasing recycling and reuse (SDG 6.3).   
  • Be situated within the framework of integrated water management and sustainable development with cooperation at the appropriate (governance) levels (SDG 6.5).   
  • Commit to source protection and adapted land use, where water-based ecosystems, nature and green-blue networks have their place and can be part of the solution, such as mountains, forests, marshes, rivers, aquifers and lakes (SDG 6.6).  
  • Ensure the continuity of water supply and sanitation through increased responsibility and participation of all stakeholders, especially users, local governments and managers (SDG 6.b). 

How do I apply for funding, and what are the deadlines? 

A project proposal is submitted to the Department of Environment. The grant application consists of an application form and a number of annexes, as described in the regulations.  

DEADLINE: the application must be submitted by July 2022.
