Research & development and innovation policy is a priority for the Walloon Region. The aim of this programme is to support research projects with high development potential in areas related to identified strategic industrial needs.

What is the purpose of the grant?
WIN2WAL grants projects consisting of industrial research, and in this context the objectives are:
Conduct innovative research:
- Situate at the scale of technological maturity downstream of basic research and upstream of projects funded within the framework of the Walloon competitiveness clusters;
- In a domain defined as strategic for the Walloon economy; for which a strong industrial need has been identified and which, in the long term, can lead to the development of a new product, process or service that can be exploited by the Walloon company supporting the project;
- Promote links between different research players in Wallonia, between companies and universities, colleges and/or associated research centres and accredited research centres.
Research projects are evaluated at the technical level according to the criteria defined in the Walloon Government Decree of 29 June 2017 on support for research, development and innovation in Wallonia. Each criterion defined in the decree has its own maximum score which is defined below:
- The innovative nature of the project (rating /15);
- Excellence and experience (rating /20);
- The quality, feasibility and relevance of the project (rating /20);
- The promotion of innovation (rating /35);
- Contribution to sustainable development (rating /10).
Who can submit an application?
The promoter must be:
- A university unit;
- A university unit or a research centre affiliated to a university.
The project can be carried out by the promoter alone or with partners, depending on the needs of the research. Possible partners are:
- A university unit;
- A university unit or a research centre affiliated to a university;
- An accredited research centre.
The research consortium must be supported by one company that can promote the results of the project.
How much funding is there?
The support method consists of awarding grants expressed as a percentage of eligible expenditure:
- University unit(s), higher education unit(s), research centre(s) linked to a higher education: funding consists of the award of a grant whose intensity is set at 100%.
- For research centres, funding consists of awarding a grant with an intensity of 75%.
The eligible costs are:
- Personnel costs related to researchers and technicians;
- Functional costs;
- General costs;
- Purchase of specific research equipment;
- Cost of materials used;
- Subcontracting costs.
Research projects have a duration of up to forty-eight months, with a mid-term review.

- DEADLINE: You can submit a DECLARATION OF INTENT for WIN2WAL from 3 JUNE 2024 to 10 SEPTEMBER 2024. The deadline for the full application closes on 4 FEBRUARY 2025.
