The automobile, a consumer good that’s been around for a long time, is governed by vast and varied demand as well as by numerous regulations aimed at guaranteeing driver safety. It’s a veritable driver of research in constant evolution according to road safety trends, technologies and policies.
The aviation and aerospace industries are among the most strategic sectors due to their civil and military elements. Technological boundaries in this sector continue to be pushed through significant research efforts, especially those having the goal of reducing the environmental impact of aircraft through hybrid electric power or through improving power efficiency, for example, with the goal of making them autonomous and accessible to all (e.g., flying taxis). Research is this sector is also largely oriented towards digital in order to save computing time and increase security through projects like Big Data. Additionally, the arrival of new players in the private sector who are developing rockets capable of landing and relaunching further pushes this sector to innovate and surpass itself through intense research activity.
Research in the maritime sector is also driven by the necessity of reducing consumption (and therefore pollution) from ships as well as improving human safety. R & D in this sector specifically aims to significantly further knowledge of hydro-elastic stresses according to sea conditions in addition to their impact on the structure of ships or other offshore units.
France leads the world as far as research in the rail sector. More generally, since guided transport is mainly supplied by strong electrical currents, it’s important to provide innovative technological solutions to guarantee user safety. Indeed, safety is a central theme which drives R&D activity in this sector. However, research is also focused on comfort and performance, for example with respect to the development of magnetic levitation.

Out of all these sectors, the automotive sector channels most of the R&D expenses in Europe. In France in 2018, there were 5.88 billion euros spent on research and development (Comité des Constructeurs Français d’Automobiles). It’s also the industrial sector in which the largest number of patents are registered (INPI).
